A fuzzy photo uploaded to a Facebook group for birdwatchers was the beginning of it. It’s likely that the woman who snapped it was unaware of what she was seeing. The majority of those who scrolled past it didn’t either. However, in May 2023, Brian Stokes, a doctoral student studying green jays at the University of Texas at Austin, noticed something in that picture. In a way, the bird in the picture was blue. It had a black mask, a white chest, and the posture of a blue jay. But something was off. The proportions weren’t quite correct. The markings were inconsistent. Stokes knew right away that this was no typical bird.
After showing it to Timothy Keitt, his faculty advisor, he and Keitt got into a car and drove to the suburb of San Antonio where the picture was taken.
What they eventually caught — after two days and a mist net that the bird spent considerable effort avoiding — turned out to be something that, as far as science can determine, had never been observed in the wild before: a natural hybrid between a blue jay and a green jay. The male bird, now known as the “grue jay” in some quarters, has a green jay mother and a blue jay father. It contains genetic material from two species that split off about seven million years ago from a common ancestor. That’s a big difference. To put things in perspective, chimpanzees and humans split off about six million years ago.
It’s worth taking a moment to consider that. The two species differed in more ways than just appearance; a blue jay is the well-known crested bird of the eastern United States, whereas a green jay is bright emerald and yellow with hints of blue and black. They also behave and sound differently, and up until recently, they had no reason to come into contact. Blue jays only traveled as far west as Houston, and green jays hardly made it past the southernmost tip of Texas as recently as the 1950s. There was just no overlap. No chance. There’s no justification for this.
Then the weather changed. Tropical birds with roots in Central America, green jays have been moving steadily northward along the Rio Grande for the past 20 years. Blue jays, on the other hand, have spread westward, perhaps as a result of habitat loss and development that has forced them from their natural ranges. By the time those two paths crossed in the San Antonio area, you had something that ecologists don’t always like to anticipate: species that have no evolutionary history together suddenly sharing trees.
The findings are part of an expanding list of “novel interactions” between species, but the researchers are cautious when using the word “novel” because their findings are truly unprecedented. This is not an instance of closely related birds becoming confused and unintentionally mating. The family of birds known as corvids, which includes ravens, crows, and jays, is regarded as one of the planet’s most intelligent bird species. Green jays and blue jays have completely different appearances. Theoretically, they ought to be able to distinguish one another with ease.

Buffalo State University biologist Gavin Leighton, who researches hybridization in wild birds, referred to the pairing as a “biological curveball.” Long-term pair bonds are formed by both species. They are picky. They are intelligent. Nevertheless, a blue jay and a green jay somehow crossed paths in a suburb northeast of San Antonio, and the outcome was years of scratching around someone’s backyard.
What was already suggested by the physical appearance was validated by the genetic work. Both species’ markers were present in the bird. In addition to making blue jay calls, it also clicked and rattled like green jays. Despite having the distinctive green jay eye spot, it trailed flocks of blue jays. Even a preserved specimen from the 1970s, a lab-produced hybrid bred in captivity, had a remarkably similar appearance. This bird, which is currently kept at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, attests to the cross’s biological viability. What nobody expected was to find it happening in the wild.
After Stokes banded and released the bird, it vanished for almost two years before reappearing in the same woman’s yard in June 2025. This is one detail that seems almost too odd to be a coincidence. Why it keeps going back to that specific backyard is a mystery. Stokes acknowledged that he is also unsure. “If it had gone two houses down,” he replied, “probably it would have never been reported anywhere.”
This discovery feels less like a neat scientific victory and more like something truly unsettling because of that kind of near-miss. Not exactly scary. However, the question of how much we’re missing is quietly raised. Stokes pointed out that hybridization in the wild is probably much more common than the scientific record indicates, with the majority of it going unreported because the right person isn’t browsing through the right Facebook group at the right time.
The study was released in the journal Ecology and Evolution in September 2025. Because both parent species increased their ranges in response to climate change, the researchers think this may be the first known instance of a vertebrate hybrid. In earlier instances, such as polar bear–grizzly hybrids, only one species was usually involved. Here, the two birds shifted, their worlds collided, and something new emerged in the void.
The future of this bird and others like it is unknown. It’s unclear if the male hybrid will ever mate or if it is fertile. However, this particular bird isn’t the main focus of the greater narrative being told here. It’s about what happens when the world rearranges itself quickly enough for species that have been apart for millions of years to suddenly become neighbors, and what unanticipated outcomes might result from that proximity.
