Anyone who has taken the time to photograph birds in the field will instantly recognize a certain frustration. You’ve been edging closer to a heron that is motionless at the water’s edge for twenty minutes. Light is beneficial. The angle is good. The bird is still there. When you press the shutter, there’s a mechanical clack, the mirror slaps back into position, and all of a sudden your frame is empty and the heron is in the air. You understood the sound. The shot did not reach you.
For decades, thousands of wetlands, forests, and meadows experienced that situation. Really, nobody was to blame. Before every exposure, DSLRs needed a mirror assembly to move out of the way, which created noise. It was unavoidable. Although some cameras had “quiet modes” that attempted to slow the mechanism down a bit, anyone who was honest about it knew the difference was negligible. It was still audible to you. More significantly, the wildlife also did.

This was altered by the move to mirrorless systems in a way that, when you sit with it, still seems a little amazing. The mechanical disturbance was already lessened in the absence of a mirror to flip. However, the fully electronic shutter—a mode in which the sensor itself reads exposure data line by line with no moving parts at all—was the true breakthrough.
Not a click. Not a clack. Nothing. It feels almost unreal to press the button while standing in a meadow with an electronic shutter turned on. You are genuinely unsure if it fired when the image appears on the screen.
However, it’s important to note that there has been an open and occasionally contentious discussion within the wildlife photography community regarding the initial significance of shutter noise.
Experienced photographers will tell you that animals are much more sensitive to human movement, scent, and the overall visual oddity of a big black lens pointing at them than they ever were to camera sounds, and the evidence largely supports their claims. When a coyote crosses a field, it is more interested in observing how your shoulders move and in the scent of the wind than it is in the intricate workings of your shutter. It runs because of that.
However, there are times when silence is obviously important. The obvious one is close-up bird photography. Compared to wildlife in crowded public parks, shy or infrequently disturbed species that have not been acclimated to human presence appear more sensitive to abrupt, sharp noises. Additionally, the electronic shutter becomes particularly useful in burst shooting, where a DSLR that rattles off eight or ten frames per second creates something that sounds more like construction work than photography. The electronic shutter isn’t just quieter during those times. It completely eliminates a variable.
Beyond the direct interaction between the animal and the photographer, a more subdued change is also taking place. The DSLR shutter noise has begun to appear noticeable in ways it never did before as mirrorless cameras have become the norm in professional wildlife photography. After years of silent photography, photographers are genuinely shocked when they hear a nearby DSLR explode. Some people now perceive what was once the ubiquitous ambient sound of photography as disruptive. It’s up for debate whether or not that perception is totally accurate, but it exists and has an impact on how group photo shoots and photo hides function.
The impact of the electronic shutter on actual shot success rates may not be as significant as the marketing for mirrorless cameras tends to imply. More keeper shots are probably caused by other factors than just silence, such as autofocus tracking, frame rates, and the capacity to pre-capture frames. In the words of one seasoned wildlife photographer, his keeper rate didn’t soar because his camera stopped producing sound. It was more difficult to measure what changed. He could become more intimate, stay longer, and feel less like an intruder. That is not insignificant.
There is one important technical warning. A rolling shutter effect was introduced by early electronic shutters; the sensor reads line by line rather than all at once, which can distort fast-moving objects like hummingbird wings mid-beat. Although manufacturers have mostly fixed this in more recent models, it serves as a reminder that silence does not always equate to perfection. It simply means silence. And quiet turns out to be just what’s needed in the right setting and on the right topic.
