After fifteen years of testing cameras, there is a certain level of trust. You’ve held enough of them to be able to distinguish between manufacturers who are actually making progress and those who are merely rearranging the specifications. For titles like Amateur Photographer and Digital Camera World, as well as more recently for Canon’s own video production projects, Timothy Coleman, Cameras Editor at TechRadar, has spent that much time experimenting with mirrorless bodies, bridge cameras, action cams, and everything in between. Therefore, his statement that a camera is flawless has some weight.
Four weeks prior to the Sony A7R VI’s formal announcement in May 2026, Coleman managed to obtain one. The body, four lenses (a compact 24mm f/2.8 prime, a 28-70mm F2 GM, a 70-200mm F4 macro zoom, and a 400-800mm F6.3-8 telephoto), two batteries, and a twin charging dock were all lent to him by Sony. That isn’t a PR setup; that’s a real-world kit. He took it to nature reserves, took pictures of sailing boats on still water, took portraits during golden hour, and spent a lot of time tracking birds on branches and through long grass at first light. According to him, the camera never missed a shot.
The A7R VI’s unique combination is what sets it apart. Traditionally, high-resolution sensors have come with a trade-off: speed is sacrificed for detail. The A7R VI’s 66.8MP fully stacked BSI CMOS sensor is a significant departure from the A7R V’s standard sensor. Faster readout from a stacked architecture results in reduced rolling shutter distortion, improved burst performance, and an enhanced autofocus system. Coleman observed that even though the resolution difference is only roughly 6MP, the difference in speed was immediately apparent when shooting with both cameras side by side (Sony lent him the A7R V for comparison).
Special consideration should be given to the autofocus system. Sony’s combined processing and AI chip, which was previously two separate chips, is incorporated into the A7R VI. This setup is identical to that of the A7 V. In actuality, this means that with what Coleman called a “super impressive hit ratio,” the camera can identify and follow guinea pigs on a lawn, a person standing in shade, birds occupying a tiny portion of the frame, and switch between subjects. During testing, he took a lot of pictures of birds, frequently with the 400-800mm lens, and discovered that the bird detection was dependable in situations where slower processors and smaller sensors would have had trouble keeping up.
During testing, one aspect that caught my attention was the battery—something that photographers don’t always discuss candidly. The first new battery type for Sony mirrorless cameras in nine years, the NP-SA100, is introduced with the A7R VI.

Compared to the NP-FZ100, which was already among the better-performing batteries in the class, it can hold 17% more charge. The drawback is that current Sony shooters cannot be used with the new body due to backward incompatibility. Loyal customers are irritated by this kind of decision, which Coleman openly acknowledged without softening it. The battery is still superior. The incompatibility is still painful despite this.
The A7R VI still lacks a few features. There is still no open-gate video recording, which is important for filmmakers who want the most post-production flexibility. When paired with larger glass, the body may feel a little cramped, and the CFexpress Type A card requirement for peak burst performance increases the cost. Coleman did not ignore these actual constraints. However, they are also drawbacks that obviously didn’t affect his overall judgment.
He described it as the first camera he’s ever thought of as perfect after four weeks in the field, which included early mornings by the water, wildlife in natural light, and portraits in the kind of warm afternoon glow that either flatters or exposes every weakness in a sensor. A person with fifteen years of comparative testing does not come to that conclusion with ease. Not every photographer will be a good fit for the A7R VI; those who specialize in sports or heavy video work might find greater value in the A9 III or A1 II. However, it’s difficult to dispute Coleman’s findings as an all-around tool for someone who shoots across genres and refuses to be constrained.
In the US, the A7R VI costs $4,498. Compared to its predecessor, it is more expensive. It also accomplishes a lot more.
